When I was just a wee little lad, Full of health and joy, My father homeward came one night And gave to me a toy. A wonder to behold it was With many colors bright And the moment I laid eyes on it, It became my heart's delight. The years have gone by too quickly it seems, I have my own little boy. And yesterday I gave to him my marvelous little toy: His eyes nearly popped right out of his head. And he gave a squeal of glee! "zip" when it moved and "pop" when it stopped,"whirrr" when it stood still I never knew just what it was And I guess I never will. 내가 건강하고 마냥 즐겁기만한 조그마한 어린 소년이었을때.. 어느날 밤 아버지께서 집으로 돌아오셔서 장난감 하나를 나에게 주셨어요. 수많은 색으로 빛나는 장난감은 보기만해도 놀랍기만 했고, 장난감에 시선이 멈추는 순간, 내 마음은 무척이나 기뻤어요. 움직일때는 "핑" 소리를 내고, 멈출때는 "탁" 하는 소리를, 정지할때는 "휙" 하는 소리를 냈어요. 난 도대체 그게 무엇인지 결코 알지 못했고, 앞으로도 알지 못할것 같아요 처음으로 장난감을 집어 들었을때 난 무척이나 놀랐지요. 커다란 초록 눈처럼 생긴 큰 단추 두개가 밑바닥에 있었거든요. 처음에 하나를 누르고 다시 다른 하나를 누르고는 뚜껑을 비틀었지요. 그리고 다시 놓아 두니.. 이렇게 하는 것이었어요. 움직일때는 "핑" 소리를 내고, 멈출때는 "탁" 하는 소리를, 정지할때는 "휙" 하는 소리를 냈어요 난 그게 무엇인지 결코 알지 못했고, 난 앞으로도 알지 못할것 같아요. 처음에는 왼쪽으로 행진하고 오른쪽으로 가다가 의자 밑으로 행진했지요. 장난감이 어디로 갔는지 살펴보니 거기에 없는거에요.. 난 울음을 터뜨렸지만 아버지는 웃기만 하셨어요. 내가 찾으리란걸 알고 계셨거든요.. 뒤를 돌아보니.. 신기한 장난감은 뒤에서 칙칙 푹푹 소리를 내고 있었던 거에요. 움직일때는 "핑" 소리를 내고, 멈출때는 "탁" 하는 소리를, 정지할때는 "휙" 하는 소리를 냈어요. 난 그게 무엇인지 결코 알지 못했고, 난 앞으로도 알지 못할것 같아요. 세월은 너무 빠르게 흘러버린것 같아요.. 이젠 내게 어린 아들이 있어요. 어제 아들에게 내 신기한 작은 장난감을 주었어요.. 아들은 너무나 기뻐 환호성을 질렀지요. 아이의 두 눈이 머리에서 거의 튀어나올뻔 했지요. 우리 둘 모두 그것이 무엇인지는 모르지만, 꼭 나처럼 아들도 장난감을 좋아해요.. 여전히 이렇게 하네요. 움직일때는 핑소리를 내고, 멈출때는 "탁" 하는 소리를, 정지할때는 "휙" 하는 소리를 냈어요. 난 도대체 그게 무엇인지 결코 알지 못했고, 난 앞으로도 알지 못할것 같아요. ------- 어구 해설 ---------- * Zip ; <차총알 등이> 핑하고 소리내며 나아가다[움직이다] * pop ; 뻥[탁]하는 소리(내며 터지는 것) * Whirrr ; 쉿[휙]하고 소리나다[움직이다, 날다] * chug ; 칙칙 푹푹하는 소리
